Extracorporeal shock wave therapy is a safe powerful treatment for chronic tendon type injuries. It is an alternative to using steroid injections, PRP therapy or surgery in some cases.

There are two types of shockwave treatment focal and radial. Focal shockwave is more powerful and produces more benefits than radial alone. The majority of research is based on focal shockwave, therefore a combination of focal & radial works well. Most clinics only offer radial shockwave so it is worth checking what type they offer.

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy produces a physical sound wave which transmits into the tissue causing a mechanical stimulation, which has a molecular-biological effect called mechanotransduction.  This stimulates a healing process to begin in the damaged tissue which results in recovery.

We have offered shockwave therapy in Horsham, West Sussex since 2018.
Patients who have suffered chronic injuries for months/years have a short course of ESWT and experienced great improvements, often becoming pain free. A typical treatment course would be 4-6 sessions over a period of 2 months. The peak recovery is seen approximately  4 weeks after the final treatment; patients are then reassessed.

We offer Focal & Radial shockwave therapy unlike most clinics which only offer the less powerful radial option.

Effects of shock wave therapy:

  • Increases the release of neuropeptides such as substance P (mediates pain, causes vasodilation and stimulates angiogenesis).
  • Inhibits cox ll enzyme reducing the inflammatory response.
  • Reduces pain (pain gate control theory).
  • Stimulates cellular health.

Conditions treated

  • Tennis/Golfer’s elbow
  • Greater trochanteric pain syndrome
  • Proximal hamstring tendinopathy
